For contractors, this is the time to start transitioning irrigation schedules rather than letting summer programming run on autopilot. Small adjustments now can help prevent overwatering, protect plant health, and keep systems performing efficiently as conditions change.

As temperatures moderate and daylight hours decrease, landscape water demand typically begins to fall. That means the schedules that worked in July or August may provide more water than plants need in September.

Review controller programming and gradually adjust run times and frequency based on current conditions. Avoid making drastic changes all at once. Instead, monitor the landscape and make incremental adjustments as temperatures and rainfall change.

The goal is to keep plants adequately hydrated without creating consistently saturated soil.

September weather can be unpredictable. A landscape may go from several dry days to a significant rainfall event, making irrigation adjustments especially important.
